Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pervasive issue in many parts of Nigeria, including Yola South LGA, Adamawa State. Advertising campaigns have been recognized as an important tool in raising awareness about social issues, changing attitudes, and encouraging behavior change. According to studies by Bello et al. (2023), advertising can play a critical role in educating communities about the negative impacts of GBV and promoting more equitable gender relations. In Yola South, where traditional gender roles may influence perceptions of violence, advertising campaigns can help challenge harmful norms and empower victims to seek support. This study explores the role of advertising in reducing gender-based violence in Yola South, focusing on the effectiveness of awareness campaigns and the role of media in shaping public perceptions and behaviors.

Despite the growing efforts to combat gender-based violence in Nigeria, the problem persists, particularly in rural areas like Yola South LGA. This study seeks to investigate the role of advertising in reducing GBV in Yola South, with a particular focus on how advertising can challenge cultural norms and encourage positive behavior change.
